Who runs this site

G. Jeffrey Ares operates this website and is responsible for the personal information described here. The site is hosted by Netlify.

What is collected

Things you choose to send

There are two forms on this site, and both are entirely optional.

• Newsletter signup. Your email address, plus a note of which page you signed up from.
• Contact form. Your name, email address, subject, message, and which description of yourself you picked (reader, media, and so on).

Both go to Netlify Forms, where they're stored so they can be read and replied to. Nothing you send is sold, rented, or passed to anyone for marketing.

Things collected automatically

Netlify keeps standard server logs for every site it hosts, which include IP addresses, browser type, and which pages were requested. These are a normal part of running a website, they're used for security and to keep the site working, not to build a profile of you.

What isn't collected

To be specific, because plenty of sites say the opposite:

• No analytics: no Google Analytics, and no privacy-friendly alternative either.
• No advertising, ad networks, or retargeting.
• No tracking pixels, no fingerprinting.
• No cookies for visitors, unless you choose to load the Facebook post on the Reviews page, which is off by default. See the Cookie Policy.
• Nothing is sold or shared with data brokers.

The newsletter

If you sign up, your address is used to send occasional updates about the books and the research behind them, nothing else. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing removes you. You can also ask to be removed at any time.

Other services this site touches

• Netlify hosts the site, stores form submissions, and keeps the server logs described above.
• Netlify Identity loads a sign-in script on every page. It's there so the author can log in to write posts. It doesn't track visitors, and unless you're signing in as the author it does nothing.
• Anthropic receives blog drafts when the author uses the writing tool's spelling and grammar cleanup. This only ever involves the author's own draft text. Nothing you submit through a form is sent there.
• Facebook can be shown on the Reviews page to display a reader's post, but only if you click to load it. Nothing is requested from Facebook just by visiting the page. If you do click, facebook.com can set its own cookies and see that you visited, governed by Facebook's own privacy policy rather than this one, and this site remembers that click in your browser's local storage so it doesn't ask again.

Links out to booksellers, social platforms, or other websites are just links. Once you follow one, that site's own privacy policy applies, not this one.

How long things are kept

Newsletter addresses are kept until you unsubscribe or ask to be removed. Contact messages are kept while they're useful for replying and for any follow-up, then deleted. Server logs are kept on Netlify's own schedule.

Your choices

You can ask what personal information is held about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted. Send a message and it'll be handled. Depending on where you live (the EU, UK, and several US states among them), you may have these rights by law; they're offered here regardless.

Children

The books are written for a general audience, and this site isn't directed at children under 13. If a child has sent personal information through a form, get in touch and it will be deleted.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top of the page changes with it. Material changes will be described here rather than slipped in quietly.
