Accessibility

The aim

The goal is to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. That's a target being worked toward rather than a certification anyone has audited, and this page says so plainly rather than claiming more than is true.

What's been done

• Keyboard access. Everything works without a mouse, focus is visible as you move through a page, and a "Skip to content" link lets you jump past the navigation.
• Screen readers. Pages use real headings and landmarks in a sensible order. Book covers and photographs carry descriptions; images that are purely decorative are hidden from screen readers so they aren't narrated as clutter.
• Reduced motion. The site has gentle movement: covers that drift, sections that fade in as you scroll. If your device is set to reduce motion, all of it stops and you get the finished state instead.
• Contrast and text. The dark palette was chosen with contrast in mind, and text can be zoomed or reflowed without the layout breaking.
• Works without JavaScript. Content is delivered as plain HTML. If scripts fail to load, pages are still fully readable.

Known limits

• The book trailer has sound and no captions yet. Everything it covers is also written out on the page around it.
• Some banner photographs come from video footage and are soft at large sizes. They're decorative, whatever they show is also described in the text.
• No formal audit has been carried out, so there are likely issues nobody has caught.

Tell us what's broken

If something here is hard or impossible to use, please say so. Describe what you were trying to do, which page, and what you're using to read it, that's usually enough to find the problem. Reports get a reply, and accessibility problems get treated as real bugs, not suggestions.
