The story continues in Book 2 of the Black Fin series.
The Story
In the cold waters of the Alaskan Pacific, an orca named Okent has built a life few of his kind ever know.
Raised by humpbacks after being lost as a newborn, Okent moves between two worlds. He is bound by blood to the orca pods, and by love to the albino humpback who calls him brother. Now he has a mate, a daughter, and a fragile peace between species that has never existed before.
That peace is about to break.
Something ancient has woken in the deep. A wounded leviathan, older than memory and driven by a pain it cannot name, has begun hunting the waters Okent calls home. Sperm whales are vanishing. Humpbacks are dying. And the creature is moving closer to the shallows where Okent's daughter plays.
Above the surface, marine biologist Carl Davidson has spent his career chasing a rumor: an albino humpback and a lone orca, traveling together. When his AI translation software finally turns their clicks and calls into words, he becomes the first human to hold a conversation with another species, and learns the ocean is far more crowded with intelligence than anyone imagined.
But not every upright means well. A fisherman is hunting Okent's daughter to sell her to an aquarium. Wind turbines are rising in the whales' migration routes. And the leviathan is still out there, still hungry, still owed a debt of blood.
Orcas, humpbacks, and sperm whales will have to set aside generations of instinct and rivalry to survive what is coming.
